## What we know

David McShane's 1865 homestead, 'three miles east of Palmer Lake' (PLHS), where he built the stone round house (the fort) of 1868 nearby; a log bunkhouse on the ranch was photographed in 1976 ('at the north end of Monument near Highway 105'). McShane died May 17, 1907. Monument's first post office (April 8, 1869) was here: McShane's 1871 site report names it 'McShane's Rancho', NE¼ Sec. 15, T11S R67W, west of the railroad line (facsimile in Lavelett, S-0011, p. 33). He took the 160 acres in spring 1865, 'just west of the present D&RG tracks' (Bill Hemingway, Empire Magazine, Sept. 21, 1975, quoting McShane's memoirs; S-0011 p. 146).
