## What we know

Will Lierd came to Monument in 1870 for his lungs, farmed 280 acres on the Douglas County line from 1872, and went into business in 1882 ('Dry goods, shoes, groceries, caskets and coffins. Established in 1882', his sign and letterhead). This Washington Street building dates from about 1888: the library's record says built 1888, and Lierd first appears in the town's business directory that year (S-0011 pp. 27-29). He was also a wholesale potato dealer and an undertaker. Later J. M. Brown's; the volunteer fire station from 1949 (Lavelett, S-0011, pp. 15, 17, 48, 50, 80).
